Digital Lab Africa is taking 3 of its 2019 winners to the legendary Annecy animation festival!
From the 10th to the 15th of June, the Annecy International Animated Film Festival will take place in France. This reference event in the animation world is welcoming over 115000 people and 11000 industry professionals, and is featuring 88 countries. During this festival, over 500 films will be screened, half of which being selected for the Annecy Festival Awards. Every year, the festival is promoting one country out of all those represented during the event. For 2019, the chosen country is Japan. Several japanese animators and directors will be present, such as the animators Yôichi Kotabe and Koji Yamamura, and the producer Yoshiaki Nishimura. Japanese animation films and exhibitions will also be presented.
This year, thanks to the partnership between Annecy Festival and Digital Lab Africa, 3 DLA mentees will get the opportunity to attend the festival with a team from Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct and the French Institute of South Africa. The mentees are the winners for Animation category 2019: Naddya Adhiambo Oluoch-Olunya, for her projet Uzi, and Lwazi Mispha, for his projet Ringa Mzansi. The third mentee is the 2019 winner of the DLA Audience Award, Justus Macharia, who won the public’s votes for his project Baba.
The Annecy Festival marks the start for the mentees of the Digital Lab Africa incubation period. They will meet with their mentors to discuss their projects, attend several events and participate to the DLA Meet-up at the Animations du Monde stand, during the MIFA. The mentees will then get to start their residency to develop their projects, thanks to the support of DLA partners.
