The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA) the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC)/the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa (NARSSA), Deep VR, Tshimologong’s Digital Content Hub and Digital Lab Africa are pleased to organise their first “Sound Jam” based on Rivonia Trial sound archives.
The jam will take place from 23 to 25 October at Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct in Braamfontein.
The Rivonia Trial of 1963-1964, which led to the life imprisonment of Nelson Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada, Walter Sisulu and several others, was recorded on Dictabelts, a now-obsolete recording format. Over 250 hours of sound recordings of the Rivonia Trial have recently been digitised and restored, thanks to the ongoing cooperation between the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC)/the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa (NARSSA), and INA (French National Audiovisual Institute) over the last five years. New technologies were used to restore the sound archive, making this invaluable heritage accessible to the South African public through the NARSSA website. This allows researchers, writers, artists and other citizens to (re)discover this deeply pivotal moment in South African history.
From a selection of digitised dictabelts, you will work as one of the 3 members of the 3 teams to create a binaural sound experience during a 3 days jam session. Your goal: use this audio archive to spatialize it and reconstituting the space of this historical moment by sourcing and staging the different elements on your experience.
You have a technical or/and artistic profile such as producer, journalist, sound designer, documentarian, sound engineer, director… and you want to work on a binaural sound experience with 3 experts: Arnault Labaronne (artistic director), Ulrico Grech-Cumbo (CEO of Deep VR) and Samkelo Mahlalela (Audio/Spatial Guru). Then this jam is for you!
All the teams will be accredited at DISCOP (14-16 November) to showcase their works!

Arnault Labaronne, artistic director (France)
Starting his career as a fiction film director, Arnault short films have been selected in more than 60 international film festivals and have won ten awards. Between 2000 and 2010, he worked as an artistic director for BORDERS, a collaborative fiction project all over Europe. As a production director and developer at UBISOFT, he collaborated on the ASSASSIN’S CREED video game. His innovative approach and his curiosity about new technologies led him to explore all types of narration, working on reinforcing the immersion and the interactivity of the audience experience.
Ulrico Grech Cumbo, technical director (Deep VR, South Africa)
Ulrico is the co-founder and CEO of Deep VR, Africa’s most experienced cinematic VR company. As an early pioneer in VR, Ulrico has been involved in producing, directing and cinematography of VR, as well as research & design of stereoscopic VR camera rigs.
Samkelo Mahlalela, audio guru (Deep VR, south Africa)
As the cultural agency of the Embassy of France in South Africa, the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) is the operator of the cultural action of France abroad, one of 96 institutes in the world. IFAS organises and supports artistic events and scientific projects throughout the country. Of these, the audiovisual projects develop links and long-term partnerships between the South African and the French cultural industries in the fields of innovation, training, storytelling, production, distribution, professional markets, public policies and regulation frameworks.
The Institut national de l’audiovisuel was founded in 1975 with the purpose of conserving archives of audiovisual materials, research and audiovisual production and professional training. The Ina is a repository of all French radio and television audiovisual archives. Ina has deployed its expertise to serve our audiovisual heritage and professionals working in the audiovisual sector, in France and on international markets.
Established in 2016 in the vibrant inner-city district of Braamfontein, Johannesburg, Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct incubates digital entrepreneurs and grows the skills pipeline for the digital economy through collaboration with academia, corporates, government and entrepreneurs. In July, 2018, Tshimologong launched a Digital Content Hub, an incubator of innovative and creative audio-visual content, in partnership with Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS). The idea of establishing a Digital Content Hub is born from an existing collaboration between Tshimologong and Digital Lab Africa, an initiative launched by IFAS in 2016 to support African start-ups creating multimedia content to realise their projects with the support of French and African leading companies. Tshimologong and IFAS have thus joined forces to integrate the existing Digital Lab Africa program within the Digital Content Hub.
