Event recap: SA talent set to score on the global stage with Digital lab Africa

On 8 June, Digital Lab Africa (DLA), the reference platform for tomorrow’s content in Africa, unveiled how the South African DLA 2016 winners for the Transmedia and Virtual Reality categories are heading for international success in the final stage of their 6-month incubation and mentorship programme.

Hosted by Professor Barry Dwolatzky within the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct and attended by H.E Christophe Farnaud, Ambassador of France to South Africa, the event gathered journalists, DLA partners, multimedia content professionals, and young start-ups reshaping the South African digital landscape. Ambassador Farnaud took the floor and highlighted the importance of the cooperation between France and South-Africa and working all together to foster growth and creativity.

About to leave for France, Yetunde Dada presented her project Round Round, developed with NY-based artist Shariffa Ali. Set to be the first ever Virtual Reality co-production between France and South Africa, Round Round is a stunning 360° immersive art film & dance experience questioning gender identity in the African context. Together with mentor and producer Antoine Cayrol, founder of the leading French VR studio Okio-Studio, they are getting ready for production by year-end.

Just returning from his residency in Paris and Cannes festival with partner John DeVries, TH Films Greg Kriek from Cape Town gave insights about what they learned from the best in the industry during their time in France. Mentored by ARTE TV channel Head of Digital Development Gilles Freissinier Reborn – the Triptych, their transmedia and high-octane action web series project gained attention from French top multimedia studios such as La Générale de Production.

After a lively Q&A session, DLA producer Frédéric Chambon concluded announcing the launch of Digital Lab Africa #2 and the next DLA call for projects in DISCOP Joburg 25-27 October, where the 5 DLA 2016 winners will be showcased.
